Grailed, an online destination for consignment designer goods, just recently released their interview with Luka Sabbat, who has made a name for himself in the fashion industry as a 19-year-old stylist, model, and entrepreneur. Grailed’s objective in partnering up with him was to convince him to let some pieces from his personal wardrobe be added to the Grailed archive, and also to choose some of his favorite pieces from the archive already established so that some of his fans can get a feel for his style and what he thinks are some essential pieces to have for the season.
In his interview, Luka talked about his brand Hotmess, which he describes as a creative [outlet] for him and two other friends of his, Photographer, Noah Dillon and Poet, Curtis. He mentions that he is working on his show to be debuted in June at Paris and that the last time he debuted his show he wasn’t expecting anyone to show up. He mentions:
“… I was freaking out. I was scared nobody was going to show up. Because you don’t know. It was my first thing, so I don’t know who’s actually supporting me or fucks with my shit. I was just scared that nobody cared enough to come see me.” -Luka
He mentions the reason why he didn’t want to use his name to represent all of his creative work is because when there’s a name attached to something there’s always bias. Some people might look forward to it because he’s Luka Sabbat and they might be fans of his, but some people might also trash his work because they might not be so fond of him.
Further along in the interview, Luka mentions that he looks up to Virgil Abloh, the Founder and Creative Director of Off-White, saying that he has helped him with so much in the past. One example he shares is that Virgil allowed him to pull samples from the Off-White showroom a day before his show was debuted. He also talks about companies not wanting to work with him because of his age, but he refused to give the names of those companies, saying that it might ruin future relationships.
The interview took an interesting turn when Luka was asked about how he feels about the fame he has acquired in recent years. He states:
“…It’s a perk, but also it’s weird sometimes, but also it’s pretty cool sometimes. It can be mad annoying.”
-Luka
and he goes on to talk about weird encounters he had with fans of his approaching him at times when he wants to just be alone. And lastly, he gave a list of more influential people to him, from cartoon characters to serial killers.
